The World Health Organization and the U.S. Census have published data on what we can expect from the adult care center industry and adult care homes over the next five years. Here are what the projections tell us about our aging population.
The global population will increase by nearly 80 million people a year to reach about 8 billion by the year 2025. About 59% of those people will live in urban areas, and 17.2% of them will require care from adults of working age. By 2025, 10% of our total population will be over 65 years old, increasing as much as 300% in Latin America and Asia.
Globally, children will increase annually at 0.25% between 1995 and 2025, but seniors will grow by 2.6%. The average life expectancy will increase to 73 years; no country will have a life expectancy of less than 50 years anywhere on the planet. More people are expected to live through this century to see the next more than any other generation in history.

Most of our deaths are attributable to infectious and parasitic diseases, circulatory disease, cancer, respiratory disease, pulmonary disease and perinatal conditions. Cancer and heart disease are more likely to kill those of us older than 70, with circulatory disease occurring 80% of the time in people over 65. Breast cancer kills women faster than prostate cancer kills men. People 60 and older experience a steep rise in developing dementia, with women more likely to suffer because of their greater longevity.

The U.S. population of 65 and older is expected to more than double between 2010 and 2050.
